To begin, lets write about how to do simple addition.
Simple addition is when you combine concepts together, for example: 3+1 or a physical concept like 2 apples plus 3 apples . This is a expression, if you want it be equation then it needs to have a result. We say a number is a result by putting an equal sign '=' after the expression and before the result. So the result of the first example we used is '3+1 = 4'. The second answer to the 2nd example is 2 apples plus 3 apples equals 5 .
